Case Summary
Baptist Medical Center, Alabama Triumvirate of nonprofits wants to buy group of hospitals from Columbia/HCA. Payment is expected to be more than $1 billion.
Good Samaritan, California Four hospital sale to Columbia/HCA with payment to establish Charitable Trust foundation. Quality, efficiency, and access were previously very good and the sale was somewhat controversial.
California Public Hospitals California has traditionally provided a great amount of care to indigent patients, but many hospitals now face closure. Several different choices are being made by counties, from privitization to nonprofit merging to rebuilding to closure. The results will be important for managing care for the poor.
Riverside Community Hospital, California Attorney General halts joint venture deal between nonprofit and for-profit Columbia/HCA. Community may have to give up larger stake in the hospital, but it willl still want to retain board members and charitable care. Some proceeds will go to trust foundation.
St. Joseph Hospital, Nebraska University merger with for-profit, Catholic hospital has not altered original mission or community support. Charity care work averages $10 million per year.
