Does Duke offer degrees in health policy?
Duke does not have a graduate program in health policy per se. Instead we offer a Graduate Health Policy Certificate. To obtain this, you must either be a) seeking a degree in another Duke school (e.g., law, busines, medicine) or graduate department; or b) admitted to Duke through Continuing Education. For this reason, there is not a separate application procedure for the Certificate.
The Fuqua School of Business at Duke offers an MBA with a concentration in Health Sector Management (HSM) which replaced an earlier MHA program. Currently, the HSM program is available only to full-time MBA students: there is no weekend or distance-learning version of this MBA program. Generally, someone interested in management in the health sector, including hospitals, pharmaceutical industry, nursing homes or other areas, would gravitate towards this degree. Because the HSM already denotes to a prospective employer that the MBA student has interest/training specifically in health field, only a handful of HSM students have pursued the Graduate Health Policy Certificate as this would be largely redundant. Instead, the Certificate tends to attract Master of Public Policy students who are obtaining their degree through the Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy.
Applying to Duke. If you are interested in Duke, you would then need to contact the appropriate program for application materials etc. To contact the Fuqua HSM program, write to hsm@fuqua.duke.edu. If you are interested in the Masters of Public Policy (MPP) program, please contact Chuck Pringle (MPPadmit@duke.edu). If you are interested in obtaining a certificate through Continuing Education, contact Paula Gilbert (pgilbert@duke.edu).
