Rural HIV Substance
Abuse and Mental Health Cost study
This study was funded by NIH,
SAMHSA, and HRSA. It completed its demonstration aspect in October
2003, and analysis of data is currently underway. It has had over
10 publication concepts approved by the federal coordinating center
on such topics as trauma, medication adherence, high-risk behaviors,
modified treatment protocols, and social support. For more information

Why Don’t Mature Smokers Quit?
The study aims are to 1)
determine whether smokers are more present-oriented than others
in decisions in health and other domains; 2) before illness onset,
determine if smokers misperceive the disutility that they will
experience when they become ill with a smoking-related disease;
3) assess the difficulty people have in making assessments of low
probability events; and 4) determine whether smokers tend to be
overly optimistic about a variety of outcomes, including but not
limited to their health.

Expansion Project
Funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental
Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to expand and enhance delivery
of substance abuse treatment services to persons multiply diagnosed
with HIV and addiction. It ensures increased access to culturally
sensitive substance abuse and HIV prevention and treatment services
through HIV primary and specialty care clinics by interdisciplinary
teams comprised of substance abuse service providers, HIV clinic
staff, and community-based HIV care/support service providers.
