Why Don’t Mature Smokers Quit?
The study aims are to 1) determine whether smokers are more present-oriented than others in decisions in health and other domains; 2) before illness onset, determine if smokers misperceive the disutility that they will experience when they become ill with a smoking-related disease; 3) assess the difficulty people have in making assessments of low probability events; and 4) determine whether smokers tend to be overly optimistic about a variety of outcomes, including but not limited to their health.
