Research and Quality: AHRQ
is the lead Federal agency charged with improving the quality,
safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of health care for all
Americans. One
of 12 agencies within DHHS. Department of Health and Human Services, AHRQ
supports
Bureau of
Health Professions: BHP provides national leadership in the
development, distribution and retention of a diverse, culturally
competent health workforce. Part
of the Health Resources and Services
Administration (HRSA).
Bureau of Primary
Health Care: BPHC funds and oversees federally qualified
health centers (FQHCs) such as community
health centers and migrant health centers, programs such
as the Healthy Communities Access Program and
specific population programs such as Health
Care for the Homeless. Part of the Health Resources and Services
Administration (HRSA).
Centers
for Medicare & Medicaid Services:
Federal agency that oversees the health entitlement programs,
Medicare and Medicaid, part of DHHS.
National Center
for Health Statistics: Principal health statistics agency
in the U.S. with
a wide range of national health data sources. Part of the CDC.
National Institutes
of Health: Part of DHHS – is
the primary agency for conducting and supporting medical research. Comprised of 27 different Institutes and Centers, such as
National
Institute of Mental Health, National Institute on Drug Abuse and National Library of Medicine.
Office
of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion: Office works to strengthen the disease
prevention and health promotion priorities of the federal Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). Part of the Office of Public Health and Science,
which is under the direction of the Assistant Secretary for Health,
the DHHS Secretary’s primary advisor on public health issues.
Office of Minority
Health: OMH seeks to improve
and protect the health of racial and ethnic minority populations
through the development of health policies and programs that
will eliminate health disparities. Also part of the Office
of Public Health and Science (see above).
Office
of Rural Health Policy: ORHP
advises DHHS on
matters affecting rural hospitals, and health care, coordinating
activities within the department that relate to rural health
care, and maintaining a national information clearinghouse.

Non-Profit, Nonpartisan Health Policy and Research Organizations
Bill And Melinda Gates Foundation: Private foundation that seeks to close the gap between rich and poor countries by encouraging new
research and supporting healthcare organizations that reach people
most in need through its Global
Health program, in addition to other programs.
Center for Studying Health System Change:
Seeks to inform
health care decision makers about changes in the health care
system at both the local and national levels and the effects
of such changes on people through objective, incisive analyses
that lead to sound policy and management decisions.
The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation: Source
of facts and analysis for policymakers, the media, the health care
community, and the general public on major health care issues facing
the nation. A very large and diverse selection of policy
briefs, data tables and full reports online.
National Academy For State
Health Policy: non-profit, non-partisan organization
dedicated to helping states achieve excellence in health policy
and practice. The organization has offices in Portland, Maine,
and Washington, DC.
National Institute For Health
Care Management: Non-profit,
non-partisan group that conducts research on health care issues.
The Foundation disseminates research findings and analysis that
promote and enhance access to health care and the efficiency
and effectiveness of health care services and delivery.
North
Carolina Institute of Medicine: Independent, non-profit organization
that provides nonpartisan health policy analysis and advice in North
Carolina. Chartered by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1983 to provide “balanced
nonpartisan information on complex and often controversial health
issues in our state”.
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation:
one of the largest funders of health
services research in the U.S.
Urban Institute: Nonpartisan economic and social policy research
organization with Health and Health Care as one of its core research
program areas.
